The height of concrete dams is increasing with the dam technology progresses, and there have been some dams whose height is more than 200m, even 300m. Cracks that commonly found in concrete gravity structure seriously affect its function, durability and service life, and even lead to overall failure of the dam. There are many factors that lead to concrete cracking and temperature is one of the critical load factors.The temperature controlling during construction progress affects weather or not the concrete cracks. This paper has researched development of the temperature during construction progress of the concrete dams. Main content of this paper is as following:This paper has introduced basic theory of temperature field and thermal stress field, including the basic principles of heat conduction, the finite element method of calculation of temperature field, and some finite element calculation formulas of thermal stress; has introduced some technical issues on thermal stress field simulation during construction progress of concrete dams with ANSYS10.0, including the feasibility that simulating thermal stress field during construction progress, treatment of basic technical issues of simulation; has made a program which is used to calculate the non-steady temperature field and the thermal stresses through ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL), and has verified its accuracy; has simulated temperature development with and without cooling measures of long tan RCC gravity dam by the program, has researched development of temperature field and thermal stress field, has analyzed thermal stress of the dam in normal operating condition, considering loads of temperature and water pressure and has researched the affect on thermal stresses in normal storage condition.The law of development of temperature field and thermal stress field obtained in this paper can provide a scientific basis for management during construction progress and provide a reference for temperature control.
